Is it mandatory to include a chapter-wise outline or thesis structure in the synopsis?

My synopsis describes the research plan. Should I also add a section predicting the chapter structure of my eventual dissertation, or is that too speculative and detailed for this stage?

Yes, including a brief, tentative chapter outline is highly recommended and often expected. It demonstrates you have a vision for translating your objectives into a coherent dissertation structure. Dedicate half a page to a bulleted list. For example:

  • Chapter 1: Introduction
  • Chapter 2: Literature Review & Theoretical Framework
  • Chapter 3: Research Methodology
  • Chapter 4: Data Analysis & Findings (Part I)
  • Chapter 5: Data Analysis & Findings (Part II)
  • Chapter 6: Discussion & Synthesis
  • Chapter 7: Conclusion & Implications
Label it as "Tentative Structure" to acknowledge it may evolve. This shows the committee you understand the scale of the writing project ahead and have a logical plan to tackle it, adding significant credibility to your synopsis.
