What research exists on equines in Early Modern English society?

I'm developing a chapter on non-human actors in my history PhD and need a solid historiography on horses. I'm aware of the basic military and agricultural narratives, but I seek a deeper understanding of their presence in urban settings, law, gender dynamics, and as living property. A synthesis of key scholars and debates would be invaluable.

The field has moved far beyond seeing horses as mere technology. Current research, which I’ve followed closely, focuses on them as sentient participants. Key debates examine equine agency (however constrained), their role in shaping urban geography and noise pollution, and their legal status as valuable property that could be litigated over. I would recommend tracking the journals Society & Animals and Agricultural History Review for the latest interdisciplinary work blending economic data with cultural analysis.
