What kinds of PhD research topics are considered strong and viable within migration studies in sociology?
I’m exploring potential dissertation topics in migration studies. The field feels broad, spanning theory, policy, and lived experience.I want to understand what makes a topic both academically rigorous and feasible.

From my experience supervising and reviewing migration dissertations, strong PhD topics usually sit at the intersection of theory and grounded empirical questions. I’ve seen particularly compelling work on labor mobility, gendered migration, and digital diasporas because they connect lived experience with structural change. I would recommend choosing a topic that is conceptually ambitious but methodologically realistic. The most successful projects also tend to speak beyond academia, engaging policy debates or broader social concerns without becoming purely applied.
