What connections exist between history and travel writing?

In my research on historiography and narrative forms, I've been analyzing how non-traditional sources construct historical knowledge. Travelogues seem to occupy this fascinating space between personal testimony and cultural record. I'm trying to systematically understand the foundational connections that scholars argue exist between these two fields.

In my archival work, I’ve seen travel writing serve as an invaluable, albeit complex, primary source. I would recommend treating it not as a straightforward historical record, but as a layered text revealing contemporary perceptions, biases, and cross-cultural encounters. It provides the "texture" of a period the smells, anxieties, and informal economies that official documents miss. The connection is profound: travelogues offer the raw, often subjective data from which more objective historical analysis can begin, highlighting the human experience within broader events.
