What are the comparative advantages of freezer storage versus filtration when preserving environmental or biological samples?

Sample preservation choices affect downstream analysis. Both freezing and filtration are widely used.I want to understand how researchers decide between them in practice.

From my experience working with environmental and biological samples, the choice depends largely on the target analyte. I have seen filtration work well when isolating dissolved components or microbes, while freezing preserves the whole sample matrix for later flexibility. I would recommend prioritizing consistency and downstream methods rather than convenience. Each approach introduces bias, so the key is selecting the one that least distorts the specific parameters you intend to measure.
