What time interval is considered appropriate when collecting a composite water or environmental sample?
Composite sampling aims to represent conditions over time. However, recommended intervals vary widely by study.I want practical guidance grounded in field experience.

From my experience in environmental monitoring, the sampling interval should reflect how quickly conditions change. I have seen hourly composites used for wastewater influent, while daily or weekly intervals suit more stable surface waters. I would recommend aligning the interval with regulatory objectives and known variability. Overly long intervals can mask peaks, while overly short ones add complexity without meaningful gain.
