What are real-life examples of inverse sampling?

In designing a reliability study, I'm considering using inverse sampling instead of binomial sampling. I understand the theory sampling until a predefined number of events occurs but I'm looking for validated, practical examples from industry or research to justify its use to my collaborators.

In my consulting work, I’ve recommended inverse sampling in specific, high-stakes scenarios. A classic example is in military or aerospace reliability testing: you test components until you observe, say, three failures. This directly estimates the failure rate. It's also used in epidemiology for studying rare diseases you sample until you find a set number of cases. This method is efficient when the event of interest is rare or costly to measure, as it guarantees a precise estimate of the proportion without predetermining an often inefficiently large sample size.
