depending on the purpose of the study, scientific method in social science is divided into exploratory and descriptive research approaches.

The major characteristics of scientific method are:
1. Logical: Here the scientific inferences is based on logical principles of reasoning.
2. Confirmable: Inferences derived should match with observed evidence.
3. Scrutinizable: The procedures utilised and the inferences derived must withstand critical scrutiny by other researchers.
4. Repeatable: Other researchers must be able to independently replicate/repeat a scientific study and obtain similar/identical results.

If the goal of your research is: 
(1) to scope out the extent of a particular phenomenon, issue, or behavior, 
(2) to generate some initial ideas about that phenomenon, then use exploratory research method.

Use descriptive method to make careful observations and detailed documentation of phenomenon of your interest.
However, these observations must be based on the scientific method.
