In mass media studies I don’t think there is any better method which can be used to gather the required data.
Textual analysis lets you gather details about how other human beings make sense of the environment.
If you want to know the manner in which individuals of different culture and subculture live in the world and
how they make sense, then go for textual analysis approach.

it is advisable to use textual analysis method only. Because this method can act as a substitute for and
data collection methods (interviews, surveys, public opinion research, observation and participant observation) and
existing indicators, resulting in reduced administrative burdens as well as requires lower costs.

Other than textual analysis I don’t think there is any other method in mass media
that is used to gather the data. For more information you can refer http://lib.oup.com.au/he/media_journalism/bainbridge2e/bainbridge1e_tools03.pdf.
