Is there a structured framework for designing sustainable goods?

I am exploring ways to systematically design products that minimize environmental impact. I want to know if there is a recognized framework or methodology that guides researchers and practitioners in developing sustainable goods. This would help in aligning design, production, and lifecycle management with sustainability principles.

From my experience, creating sustainable goods benefits immensely from a structured framework, though there isn’t a single universal standard. I have seen approaches that integrate lifecycle assessment, eco-design principles, and circular economy strategies. I would recommend starting with a clear mapping of environmental impacts across a product’s life, from raw material sourcing to disposal. Aligning design, materials, and manufacturing choices with sustainability criteria ensures practical results. By combining frameworks like ISO 14001, Cradle-to-Cradle principles, and circular design strategies, practitioners can develop products that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable. This holistic perspective is key to truly sustainable innovation.
