How are plants selected for sustainable landscaping?
I'm part of a multidisciplinary team designing a large, supposedly "green" residential complex. The architects want an aesthetic plant list, but as the ecologist, I need to advocate for a selection based on sustainability metrics. I'm looking for a defensible, science-based framework to evaluate and rank species options based on their long-term ecological performance and resource use.

I've developed selection matrices for dozens of projects, and the key is to shift from a visual catalogue to a performance-based screening process. I would recommend a four-stage filter. First, select only from a pre-vetted regional native species list this ensures ecological compatibility. Second, score candidates on key functional traits: high water-use efficiency, deep rooting, and whether they provide food or shelter for pollinators. Third, model their projected performance under future climate scenarios for your site. Finally, consider propagation and maintenance logistics; a superb native that requires intensive nursery care may have a higher lifecycle carbon cost than a simpler, equally robust alternative. It's a balancing act.
