Can you recommend a framework for integrating sustainable supply chain and product development?

I am studying sustainable business strategies and want to know frameworks or models that allow firms to integrate environmental and social considerations into supply chain management and product development processes effectively.

From my experience, frameworks such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) combined with Circular Economy principles provide an effective pathway for integrating sustainability into supply chain and product development. I have seen firms map environmental impacts from raw material sourcing to product end-of-life while designing eco-friendly products. I would recommend adopting Supplier Sustainability Scorecards, modular design, and closed-loop feedback systems to ensure continuous improvement. This holistic approach aligns product innovation with supply chain decisions, reducing environmental impact, improving efficiency, and meeting stakeholder expectations for sustainable business practices.

The Eco-Design and Supply Chain Integration Framework (or a circular economy model like the one from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation) works really well here.

Basically, you want to bring sustainability in at the very start of product development—materials, sourcing, manufacturability, end-of-life—not bolt it on at the end. Tools like lifecycle assessment (LCA) and design for X (DfX) help bridge the two sides. Some companies also use ISO 14001 or BS 8001 as guiding structures.

It's less about one perfect framework and more about creating feedback loops between your designers and your supply chain folks early and often.
