Is anyone actually building their own healthcare simulations, or does everyone buy off-the-shelf?

I want to build a custom simulation for our hospital's patient flow, not just use a generic tool. Is anyone else doing this, or am I insane?

You're in good company. Many researchers and institutions build homegrown simulations for specific needs: training, system optimization, pandemic surge planning. Platforms like AnyLogic (agent-based, discrete-event, system dynamics) and Simul8 are popular for creating tailored scenarios. Off-the-shelf tools are great for standard problems. Custom simulations let you model the exact weirdness of your system. If you have the time and the question is unique, build it.
