How do I negotiate a higher stipend or better funding package after admission?

I have a PhD offer with a stipend, but it's lower than offers from peer institutions. Is it appropriate to negotiate for more money? If so, how do I approach this without seeming entitled or risking my offer being withdrawn?

Yes, you can negotiate, but tact and evidence are crucial. Do not frame it as a demand. Instead, email your prospective supervisor or the graduate coordinator: 1) Express gratitude and enthusiasm for the offer. 2) State your concern factually: "I am extremely interested, but I have a practical concern regarding the stipend. Based on my research, the cost of living in [City] is approximately X% higher than at [Other University], making the offered stipend challenging." 3) Provide evidence: Mention a competing offer (if you have one) or cite reliable cost-of-living data. 4) Make a specific ask: "Is there any possibility of an increase to the stipend or additional guaranteed TA/RA support?" 5) Reaffirm your commitment. Departments sometimes have discretionary funds. The worst they can say is no; they will not rescind the offer for a professional inquiry. Avoid ultimatums.
