Are there specific funding opportunities for international PhD students?
I'm an international student applying to PhD programs in the US/UK. Many funding sources seem restricted to domestic students. Where can I find scholarships and fellowships that are open to international applicants?

Funding is more challenging but available. Prioritize: 1) Universities with Full Funding for All: Many top US/UK programs fund all admitted PhDs, domestic and international, equally. This is your safest path. 2) Global Fellowships: Fulbright (for study in the US), Gates Cambridge, Rhodes Scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarships. 3) Home Country Support: Check with your government's education ministry for overseas PhD scholarships (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission). 4) University-Specific Awards: Many schools have endowed scholarships for international students; check the graduate admissions website. 5) Research Council Funding: In the UK, some UKRI studentships are open to internationals but may only cover fees, not stipend. Start your search 18 months early. Your application must be exceptional to compete for limited spots. A strong offer from a fully-funded program is often more secure than chasing external fellowships.
