How can I find and apply for external PhD fellowships and grants?

I want to apply for external fellowships (like NSF GRFP, Fulbright, etc.) to increase my funding and prestige. Where do I start looking, and how can I strengthen my application as an international or domestic student?

Start early—many deadlines are a year before your PhD. First, use curated databases: your target university's graduate funding page, national agencies (NSF, NIH, SSHRC), and aggregators like ProFellow or FindAPhD. For your application: 1) Research Proposal: Even if tentative, it must show originality, feasibility, and alignment with the fellowship's mission. 2) Personal Statement: This isn't your life story; it's an intellectual autobiography explaining your journey to this research question. 3) Letters of Recommendation: Choose recommenders who can speak specifically to your research potential and independence, not just your grades. 4) Previous Research Experience: Detail your role and the skills you developed. For programs like NSF GRFP, they fund people, not just projects, so emphasize your broader impacts (outreach, teaching, diversity). Treat the application like a serious research project.
