How do functionalist and generational theories differ in explaining youth behavior?

Youth behavior is explained differently depending on the theoretical lens used.Functionalist accounts emphasize social roles, while generational theories stress historical context.I’m interested in how these perspectives diverge and what each explains well.

From my experience teaching sociological theory, functionalist perspectives view youth behavior mainly in terms of social integration and role preparation. I have seen this approach explain stability well but struggle with rapid change. Generational theories, by contrast, highlight how shared historical experiences shape youth values and actions. I would recommend using them together: functionalism clarifies structural expectations, while generational theory captures why young people reinterpret or resist those expectations.
