How are “theory” and “paradigm” defined, and how do they differ in research practice?
In academic writing, theory and paradigm are sometimes used interchangeably. This creates confusion when framing research assumptions.I’m seeking a clear distinction grounded in scholarly practice.

From my experience teaching research methods, theory and paradigm operate at different analytical levels. I have seen theory used to explain specific social processes, while paradigms shape the broader assumptions about what counts as valid knowledge. I would recommend thinking of paradigms as the worldview that frames inquiry, and theories as tools used within that worldview. Keeping this distinction clear strengthens methodological coherence and argumentation.
