For creativity, should you think outside the box, or never have a box at all?

The most powerful approach is a bit of both. You should prevent rigid, unquestioned boxes (like "this is how it's always done") from forming by staying curious and flexible. However, you usually need to understand the existing box—the current paradigm—to innovate in a way that's meaningfully disruptive, not just random. True breakthrough creativity often comes from deconstructing the known pieces and reassembling them in a radically new way, not from ignoring them completely.
