Why is the phase space threshold method everywhere in ADV data cleaning?

Because it works well enough and is easy to implement. The PSTM is intuitive: you plot velocity increments in 3D phase space and cut off outliers beyond a statistical threshold. Fancier methods like Kernel Density Estimation might give you cleaner spectra closer to the -5/3 law, but they're heavier and finickier. The PSTM is a robust, computationally cheap first pass. Sometimes "good enough and fast" wins.
