Which planet has the largest number of satellites?

I'm updating educational materials on comparative planetology, and the numbers keep changing due to improved telescope surveys. The traditional answer of Jupiter or Saturn seems to be in flux, and I want the most current, verified count to ensure accuracy for students.

As of my latest review of the literature, the record has firmly shifted to Saturn. For decades, it was a close race with Jupiter, but dedicated surveys, particularly using facilities like the Subaru Telescope, have led to a surge in confirmed Saturnian moon discoveries. The current count exceeds 140, significantly ahead of Jupiter. These are mostly small, irregular captured objects in distant, retrograde orbits. The key takeaway is that this lead is likely to grow, as Saturn's gravitational sphere of influence in the chaotic outer solar system made it more efficient at capturing these objects.
