What’s the best way to handle a question you don’t know the answer to in a PhD interview?
I'm terrified of freezing if they ask something completely outside my preparation. Should I try to bluff, admit ignorance, or attempt a logical guess? What response maintains my credibility?

Never bluff. This is a test of your research temperament, not your omniscience. I recommend the "Think-Aloud Problem-Solving" method. First, calmly acknowledge the gap: "That's an interesting angle I haven't explored directly." Then, structure a guess: "Based on my knowledge of X and Y, I would hypothesize that..." or "My first step to find out would be to search for papers on [related concept Z]." Finally, connect it back: "This connects to my proposal because..." This shows intellectual honesty, structured thinking, and an ability to learn—all crucial for a PhD. The worst response is a panicked "I don't know." The best is a calm, logical walk through how you would find out.
