In a PhD interview, how do I honestly answer "What are your weaknesses‑" without sabotaging my chances?

I know this classic question is coming. I have real weaknesses, like getting deep into coding details and sometimes losing sight of the bigger picture. How do I present this authentically while still appearing capable?

The key is to name a real, specific weakness, but frame it as a recognized challenge with an active mitigation strategy. For your example, I'd say: "I’ve learned that my deep focus on implementation details can sometimes obscure the high-level research narrative. To counter this, I now mandate weekly 'big picture' writing sessions and use project management tools to align daily tasks with overarching goals. My PhD plan includes regular milestone reviews with my supervisor to maintain this balance." This shows self-awareness, proactivity, and a plan—exactly what committees seek. Avoid clichés ("I'm a perfectionist") or fatal flaws. They want to see you can manage your weaknesses.
