What recent advances in plant biology are helping address global challenges?

With pressures from population growth and environmental change, plant biology research has urgent, applied goals. I'm following the literature but would appreciate a synthesis of which advances are moving from the lab to real-world impact. My question focuses on tangible innovations whether in crop engineering, climate resilience, or sustainable production that are actively being deployed or are on the immediate horizon.

I would recommend focusing on a few transformative areas. First, the use of CRISPR for precise gene editing is creating crops with enhanced nutrition, disease resistance, and longer shelf life. From my experience, equally significant are advances in understanding and engineering pathways for abiotic stress tolerance like drought or salinity which are crucial for climate resilience. Furthermore, work on improving photosynthetic efficiency and nitrogen use in staple crops directly addresses the twin challenges of boosting yields and creating more sustainable agricultural systems with a lower environmental footprint.
