From my experience with alternative assessment research, I see ungraded approaches as a promising way to shift focus from extrinsic validation to intrinsic learning. When implemented thoughtfully, narrative feedback, portfolios, and performance tasks can enhance motivation, deepen reflection, and support diverse pathways. However, I would caution that ungraded systems require careful scaffolding to ensure clarity of expectations and equity. Without supportive teacher training and stakeholder buy?in, ungrading can become ambiguous rather than liberating. Its value lies in creating assessment that educates, not just evaluates.
