Multimodal refers to a transport system that uses multiple modes (e.g., ship, rail, truck) under a single contract or operator. Intermodal specifically describes the movement of cargo in a single unit (like a container) that is transferred between different modes without handling the goods themselves. All intermodal transport is multimodal, but not all multimodal is intermodal.
