What does ghana’s national health insurance scheme actually cover?

Ghana's NHIS is often held up as a model. But if I'm a patient there, what services can I actually get for free or at low cost?

The NHIS covers a broad package of essential services: outpatient consultations, inpatient care, maternity services (including delivery), most surgeries, and medications for common conditions like malaria, hypertension, and diabetes. Specialist treatments and some high-cost drugs may have limits. The scheme aims to remove financial barriers to basic care. Like all insurance, coverage isn't infinite but for the core services people need most, it's designed to be there.
