Major open problems include robust perception in adverse weather (heavy rain, fog), predicting the intent of pedestrians and other drivers, navigating complex urban intersections and unprotected left turns, and formulating ethical decision-making frameworks for unavoidable collision scenarios. Scalable real-time motion planning that balances safety, comfort, and traffic rules in dense, dynamic environments remains a significant challenge.
