Safe and ethical use rests on multiple pillars. First, robust and transparent oversight by multidisciplinary review boards is non-negotiable. Second, proactive and inclusive public engagement is needed to align innovation with societal values. Technically, stringent biosafety protocols and ongoing risk-benefit assessments for each application are crucial, especially distinguishing between somatic and heritable edits. Ethically, upholding autonomous, informed consent and ensuring equitable access to benefits are paramount. From my experience in governance, we must also establish international norms to manage dual-use risks, ensuring these powerful tools promote justice and do not exacerbate existing inequalities.
