"What is life?" asks for the defining principle of animate matter, answered biologically (metabolism, reproduction) or metaphysically (consciousness, purpose). "What is right or wrong?" asks for the foundation of morality, answered by ethical theories (duty, consequence, virtue). Both questions probe the essence and norms of existence, seeking principles that distinguish living, valuing beings.
