To what extent can literature genuinely contribute to moral improvement?

Literature is often praised for its moral value. However, claims about moral improvement are difficult to verify.I am interested in how this idea is treated in literary theory and criticism.

From my experience engaging with both literary theory and teaching, literature rarely produces direct moral transformation, but it can deepen moral awareness. I have seen readers become more attentive to complexity, ambiguity, and other perspectives through sustained engagement with fiction. I would recommend framing literature’s moral role as indirect and developmental rather than instructional. It expands ethical imagination rather than prescribing behavior, which is precisely where its enduring value lies.
