What are some top graduate programs that specialize in antenna design and related RF/electromagnetics research?

I’m exploring graduate programs where I can specialize in antenna design, applied electromagnetics, and RF systems. These areas blend theory, simulation, and physical measurement, and I’d like to know which universities or research groups offer strong coursework, labs, and faculty expertise in this field.

From my experience advising students interested in antennas and RF systems, strong programs combine rigorous electromagnetic theory with hands-on design and measurement. In the United States, universities with notable research activity include University of Colorado Boulder — known for its Electromagnetics, RF & Microwaves group — and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which has deep RF/antenna research traditions; many students pursue master’s or PhD work in these areas. Other well-regarded options often reported by peers and alumni include University of Michigan, Georgia Tech (with the Georgia Tech Research Institute supporting antenna and radar work), and several California schools with strong electromagnetics labs. In Europe, groups such as the Queen Mary University of London Antennas & Electromagnetics group and networks like the European School of Antennas and Propagation (ESoA) provide excellent research environments across institutions. These programs typically blend theory, simulation, and experimental research, positioning graduates well for industry and academic careers in antenna design and wireless systems.
