What are effective strategies for studying physics and mathematics?

As I prepare for my qualifying exams and thesis research, I find myself needing to internalize vast amounts of complex material. I'm looking beyond passive reading for strategies that promote deep, long-term understanding and the ability to apply concepts flexibly to novel problems.

Having mentored many graduate students, I recommend a balanced, active approach. Dedicate most of your time to doing solving problems without your notes, deriving equations from first principles, and explaining concepts aloud as if teaching. Use spaced repetition software for fundamental definitions and theorems. Crucially, always ask "why" and seek connections between topics; see how linear algebra underpins quantum mechanics, for instance. This builds a robust, interconnected knowledge web, not a fragile list of facts. It’s the difference between recognizing a path and being able to chart a new one.
