Can anyone recommend an inexpensive digital projector for an 8-meter planetarium dome?
Our small college's analog star projector has failed, and we have a modest budget to go digital. The dome is 8 meters in diameter. I'm overwhelmed by projector specs lumens, resolution, contrast and how they translate to a fulldome experience. I need guidance on the minimum viable specs for a clear, bright image in a darkened dome for an audience of about 30.

Having consulted on several dome upgrades, I prioritize three specs for a budget 8m dome. First, brightness: look for at least 5,000 lumens; a darker dome helps, but you need reserve for partial house lights. Second, resolution: 1920x1200 (WUXGA) is the practical minimum to avoid visible pixelation on star fields. Many budget systems use a single projector with a fisheye lens. Third, ensure it has a robust, serviceable cooling system projectors often fail from heat stress. I would recommend exploring the used market for models from brands like Digitalis or E&S that are being retired from larger installations; they often have the durability needed.
