Epiphenomenalism is the theory that mental events (thoughts, feelings) are caused by physical processes in the brain but have no causal influence on the physical world. Consciousness is a mere by-product, an "epiphenomenon," like the whistle of a steam engine: it occurs, but doesn't drive the train. It challenges our intuition that our thoughts cause our actions.
