Is it appropriate to connect with senior scholars on LinkedIn or Twitter/X for networking?
I see many professors on LinkedIn and Twitter. Is it considered professional to send a connection request or follow them, especially if we haven't met in person? What should my message say?

Yes, but the platform and context matter. On Twitter/X, following is public and expected; you can then engage by thoughtfully replying to their posts about research. On LinkedIn, sending a connection request is more direct. If you haven't met, always include a personalized note: "Dear Prof. X, I'm a PhD student at Y studying Z. I greatly admire your work on [specific topic], particularly your 2023 paper. I would be honored to connect here." This is generally well-received. ResearchGate is even more purpose-built for this; a follow or message about a shared research interest is standard. The key is to show genuine intellectual interest, not just a desire to add a name to your list. Your profile should also look professional.
