How do I start building an academic network as a shy or introverted PhD student?

I struggle with large conferences and approaching senior scholars. My work is good, but I know networking is crucial. What are some low-pressure, effective ways to build connections without feeling inauthentic or overwhelmed?

As an introvert myself, I found success by reframing networking as "building a few meaningful connections" rather than collecting cards. Start digitally: follow scholars on Twitter/X or LinkedIn, engage thoughtfully with their posts. At events, set a small goal (e.g., "Have one substantive conversation"). Use a prepared question about their work to bypass small talk. Seek out smaller workshops or poster sessions, which are more conversational. Offer to help organize a seminar; this gives you a formal role. Follow up via email with a specific reference to your discussion. Remember, many senior scholars are also introverted; they often appreciate a thoughtful, prepared junior colleague over a slick networker. Quality over quantity.
