There are 5 core types of research gaps - Knowledge Gap, Evidence Gap, Theoretical Gap, Methodological Gap, Practical/Application Gap. Yes, Knowledge, Empirical, and Methodological gaps are extremely common and a strong, practical focus for framing PhD research. While other types exist, these three will effectively cover most research situations and are well-respected by committees.
