How do I handle the peer review process as an independent scholar without institutional backing?

I'm about to submit my first paper as an independent scholar. Should I address my lack of affiliation in the cover letter? How do I respond if a reviewer questions my methodology due to no lab/university oversight?

Be transparent and proactive. In your cover letter and author affiliation, simply state "Independent Scholar" and provide your city/country and professional email. Don't apologize or explain. In the Methods section, be exceptionally detailed—document equipment, software versions, and analysis steps to pre-empt concerns. If a reviewer questions oversight, respond factually: "The study followed a pre-registered protocol (link) and all data/code are available in the repository (link) for verification. The analysis was conducted using [standard software/technique] as described." Your best defense is radical transparency and reproducibility. Frame your independence as enabling unbiased research. Most editors care about the paper's quality, not the author's address. Let the work's rigor speak for itself, and engage with reviewers respectfully and substantively, as you would from any institution.
