How can I conduct and publish rigorous research as an independent scholar without institutional affiliation?
I left academia but want to continue publishing in peer-reviewed journals. I lack lab access, library subscriptions, and funding. What are the most effective strategies for producing work that meets academic standards and gets taken seriously?

Your greatest assets are ingenuity and networks. First, utilize open resources: arXiv/SSRN for preprints, Google Scholar for searching, Unpaywall for articles, and public data sets (government, ICPSR, Figshare) for analysis. For writing, use Zotero for references. Seek collaborations with institutionally-affiliated scholars who can provide library access or lab resources in exchange for your expertise; many are open to it. Target journals with low or waived APCs for independent researchers. Most importantly, pre-register your studies and document your methodology meticulously to pre-empt skepticism about rigor. Frame your independence as a strength—freedom from departmental politics—in your cover letters. Building a track record of solid preprints and publications is the ultimate currency.
