How do I format headings and subheadings in a PhD research proposal‑ Is there a standard numbering system?

My proposal has multiple levels: main chapters, sections within them, and sometimes sub-sections. Should I use numbered headings (1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1), or just bolded titles? What's the most professional and clear format for evaluators?

A clear hierarchy is vital for readability. I recommend a numbered decimal system (e.g., 1., 1.1., 1.1.1.) for its unambiguous structure. Use 3-4 levels maximum:

  • Level 1 (Centered/Bold, Title Case): 1. INTRODUCTION
  • Level 2 (Flush Left, Bold, Title Case): 1.1 Literature Review
  • Level 3 (Flush Left, Bold Italic, Sentence case): 1.1.1 Gap in current studies
  • Level 4 (Indented, Italic, run into paragraph): Theoretical framework: ... (used sparingly).
Ensure consistent font (e.g., Times New Roman 12pt or Arial 11pt) and spacing before/after headings. This system helps evaluators navigate and signals your organizational skill. Whether you number or not, consistency is non-negotiable. Use your word processor's "Styles" function to automate this; it also generates a Table of Contents if needed.
