How can researchers get guidance for publishing in cellular and molecular biology?

As a postdoc, my career depends on high-impact publications, but the process feels opaque. Beyond reading author guidelines, how do you truly understand what a journal's editors and reviewers are looking for? I need practical strategies beyond the obvious, from manuscript shaping to rebuttal.

I've served as an editor and can say the key is reverse-engineering the process. First, I would recommend a deep, structural analysis of 5-10 recent papers in your target journal map their narrative arc, figure logic, and discussion depth. Then, seek pre-submission guidance: use institutional editing services, present at conferences for feedback, and consider ethical pre-print posting to gauge community response. Finally, always write rebuttals as a collaborative revision plan, not a defense. View reviewers as unpaid mentors guiding you to the journal's standard.
