Can diagnostic tests be used as a central instructional focus in teaching and learning?

Diagnostic tests are commonly used to identify learning gaps. I’m interested in whether they can actively shape instruction rather than just inform placement. This question relates to formative assessment practices.

From my experience, diagnostic tests can be powerful instructional anchors when used thoughtfully. I have seen teachers redesign lessons around diagnostic findings, leading to targeted and efficient instruction. I would recommend treating diagnostics as starting points rather than labels. When results guide differentiation and pacing, diagnostic assessment becomes an integral part of teaching rather than a one-time measurement.
