What similarities exist in the portrayal of native peoples in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness?
Achebe and Conrad are often read in opposition to one another.Yet both texts depict African societies through particular narrative lenses.I want to understand where their portrayals unexpectedly converge.

From my experience teaching both texts together, the similarities are subtle but instructive. I have seen that both novels frame indigenous life through moments of disruption and crisis rather than everyday normalcy. I would recommend noting how ritual, violence, and silence function structurally in each work. Even where Achebe corrects Conrad, he still works within a narrative economy shaped by colonial encounter and historical rupture.
