What metaphors or analogies are used to describe situations similar to a cauldron?

In my research on complex systems, I often need to describe environments of intense pressure and potential transformation. The concept of a 'cauldron' is useful, but I'm looking for richer, more evocative parallels. Could you share other metaphors from different fields that capture this essence of concentrated, volatile change?

In my work with organizational change and conflict zones, I've seen the "pressure cooker" as the most direct parallel it implies contained stress with a potential for release. For a more biological take, I often recommend "crucible," which carries connotations of both testing and alchemical transformation. Another potent one is "tinderbox," which emphasizes volatility and the spark of ignition. The key is choosing a metaphor that aligns with whether the outcome you're emphasizing is creative, destructive, or purely unstable.
