What is the etiquette for asking a senior researcher for a virtual coffee or informational interview?

There's a professor at another university whose career path I admire. I'd like to ask for 20 minutes of their time for an "informational interview." Is this a normal request? How do I frame the email so they're likely to say yes?

This is a common and often welcomed request if done respectfully. Your email should: 1) Be brief and specific: "Dear Prof. X, I'm a PhD student at Y studying Z. I've long admired your work on [specific topic, cite a paper], particularly your approach to [specific method or concept]. 2) Make a clear, low-commitment ask: "I would be grateful for the opportunity to learn from your experience. Would you be available for a 15-20 minute virtual coffee in the coming weeks?" 3) Demonstrate preparedness and respect: "I have a few specific questions about [e.g., navigating interdisciplinary research, your perspective on the field's future]." 4) Offer flexibility: Suggest 2-3 specific windows (e.g., "I'm free Mon or Wed afternoons"). This shows you value their time. Most scholars are happy to help earnest junior researchers. If they don't reply, don't follow up more than once.
