What distinguishes hot from cold extrusion in manufacturing?
I am studying material processing techniques and want to compare hot and cold extrusion. I aim to understand the differences in temperature, material properties, energy consumption, and typical applications in manufacturing.

From my experience, hot extrusion involves heating metals above their recrystallization temperature, making them easier to shape and ideal for large or complex profiles. Cold extrusion, by contrast, is performed at or near room temperature, offering higher dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and strength due to work hardening. I have seen that hot extrusion consumes more energy but allows processing of harder metals, while cold extrusion is more energy-efficient and better for small, precise parts. I would recommend selecting the method based on material, required tolerances, and production scale to optimize performance and cost.
