What are the principles and goals of green chemistry?
As an industrial chemist looking to transition our processes to be more sustainable, I need a clear, actionable framework. I've heard the 12 Principles, but I want to understand the broader philosophical goals they serve. Is the primary goal waste elimination, hazard reduction, or something more systemic like designing chemistry that integrates with natural cycles from the start?

Having advised on green chemical implementations, I see its core goal as preventative: to design hazards out of the system from the start, rather than managing waste and risk later. The 12 Principles serve this by prioritizing waste prevention (Principle 1: Prevent Waste), using safe materials, and maximizing energy efficiency. Ultimately, it’s about creating chemical products and processes that are inherently safer for health and the environment, and which ideally use renewable resources. It’s a fundamental shift from remediation to intelligent, sustainable design.
