What are the most important bibliometric metrics I should track for my tenure portfolio?

My tenure file is due next year. Everyone talks about H-index, citations, and journal impact factors. Which numbers do committees actually weigh most heavily, and how can I present them in the most favorable light without gaming the system?

Committees look for contextualized metrics, not raw numbers. The three most common are: 1) Your H-index relative to promoted peers in your specific sub-field (compare using Scopus or Web of Science). 2) Citations per Publication, which normalizes for career length and is more telling than total citations. 3) Journal prestige, often using CiteScore or Journal Impact Factor quartiles. However, savvy committees now look beyond these. In your portfolio, present a clear table with these metrics alongside a narrative. Highlight highly-cited papers, invitations to speak (evidence of reputation), and qualitative impact (policy use, software adoption). Never just list numbers; explain what they signify about your growing influence in your discipline. Avoid gaming; consistency and quality always win.Committees look for contextualized metrics, not raw numbers.
