What are the main limitations and potential pitfalls of relying solely on quantitative bibliometric data to understand a scientific field?

In my PhD work, I'm using bibliometrics to scope my field. My supervisor cautioned against over-reliance on numbers alone. I want to ensure my analysis has depth and isn't misled by what the data can't show. What blind spots should I actively account for?

Based on my experience mapping fields for research councils, I would caution that sole reliance on quantitative bibliometrics offers a dangerously incomplete picture. I have seen it systematically undervalue groundbreaking work in niche or emerging areas that haven't yet accrued citations, and it completely misses the qualitative intellectual content of debates. It can also reinforce existing biases toward established groups and dominant journals. I always recommend triangulating with expert surveys and deep qualitative reading to understand the true drivers and tensions in a field, not just its popular footprints.
